Fraudsters are using the various ways to scam the users with their UPI ID and ultimately fading with the money from their bank accounts.
Here is how fraud is happening through SMS Spoofing
- Attackers send malicious files/links through WhatsApp in the name of a hospital appointment, hotel booking, or courier delivery assistance.
- As soon as you click the file/link, an SMS triggers to your bank to start registration.
- The attacker then completes the UPI registration process on the malicious device.
- Finally, the attacker after taking control of your UPI account uses social engineering tricks to get your MPIN.

We therefore advise you to take extra caution while opening files/links received through WhatsApp from untrusted accounts. Transact using the bank authorized UPI or Mobile Banking application and don’t click on any link coming through SMS.
