Can NRI Use UPI To Transfer Funds ? – NPCI will be enabling transactions from mobile numbers having country codes of Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, USA, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom, along with the current domestic country code to access the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) on their international mobile numbers as well.
How To Add International Mobile Number for UPI ?

Now NRIs of these 10 countries can add their International Mobile number for UPI transactions in those countries. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued new guidelines allowing NRIs in ten countries to access UPI services using their international mobile numbers for banks accounts which are classified as Non Resident External (NRE) or Non Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts.
How Can NRI Use UPI To Transfer Funds ?
Currently setting up a UPI ID for any payment app like Google Pay or PhonePe, BHIM etc. requires a valid India mobile phone number. NRIs will just need to link their NRE and NRO accounts linked to their international SIM to UPI and use it like any Indian UPI user for merchant payment as well as peer-to-peer payments.
- You need to open a NRE or NRO account with the bank
- Apply for registering the mobile number along with country’s code
- Once the mobile number is added,
- Install the BHIM payment app from Playstore or Apple Store for iOS devices
- Click on Register for UPI
- Apps will automatically send & verify the SMS and Phone binding
- Post successful validation, create a new 4 digit PIN
- Now, Login with the new Pin and Go to Profile
- Click on Bank account
- Choose your bank and enter the last six digit of your Global Debit Card
- Enter expiry and other details
- OTP will be sent for the validation and auto read
- Post successful validation, your bank account will be linked to BHIM UPI
- No You are ready to do the transaction
- You may also Create or Modify the VPA
- Virtual Payment Address (VPA) will be automatically assigned as mobilenumber@upi as default
- You can modify it and keep any name or alphanumeric value.

NPCI has directed to the individual banks to ensure the UPI account is only allowed as “per the extant FEMA regulations and adherence to the guidelines/instructions issued by the concerned regulatory departments of Reserve Bank of India from time to time.” Further, all the “necessary Anti-Money Laundering (AML)/ Combating of Financing of Terrorism (CT) checks and compliance validation/account level validations as per the extent” need to be applicable to these bank accounts.
